Effexor, known generically as venlafaxine, has been one of the most commonly used antidepressant medications in the United States in recent years. It was developed by Wyeth pharmaceuticals, which was later purchased by the drug manufacturing giant Pfizer.

While Effexor may have helped many people struggling with depressive disorders and anxiety disorders, it has also had harmful side effects for many. Some patients have suffered from serotonin toxicity or serotonin syndrome when taking this medication in combination with certain other types of drugs, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Paxil. It has also been associated with serious birth defects, including heart defects, cleft palates and limb defects in babies born to mothers who took Effexor while pregnant.

Effexor has also been associated with violent or suicidal thoughts among young patients, a rise in eye pressure, birth defects and numerous other side effects. If you believe you or your child may have been harmed as a result of use of Effexor as prescribed by a doctor, our law firm in St. Louis invites you to discuss your concerns with one of our attorneys.
