Congratulations to Mitzi Colin Lopez on winning the $1,000 Devereaux, Stokes, Fernandez, & Leonard scholarship. The award is given to an immigrant or first-generation Hispanic pre-law or law student to be used toward tuition, room and board, or other educational expenses.
Applicants filmed a video answering the following question: What are the greatest barriers in our legal system to justice for all? How can you work to change this?
In her video essay, Mitzi addressed how court fees and time off work for court appearances disproportionately impact low-income individuals and people of color. Watch the full video here.
Gonzalo Fernandez, personal injury attorney and partner at DSFL, founded the scholarship to continue advocating for the Hispanic community. As a young child, he moved to the United States from Mendoza, Argentina to St. Louis – his current hometown – and continues to dedicate his practice to civil plaintiff’s personal injury litigation and serving the legal needs of the growing Hispanic population.
Gonzalo understands the financial barriers that can arise while receiving an education and wants to do his part to support the next generation of attorneys.
Details on the 2021 award will be posted on this page in the coming months.
